How I used a #podcast to help my Aphasia

People with #Aphasia never fully recover, but certain strategies can help. With the help of my wife, who came up with the idea of using flashcards, I managed to regain some of my speech. Through #speechtherapy, I became more fluent.

My story begins in January 2019, during a meeting in London. I had difficulty finding the right words to speak. CT and MRI scans revealed that I had suffered a stroke due to bleeding in the brain and was diagnosed with #Aphasia.

At the start of 2020, I began feeling more positive about returning to work. I had the idea of creating a documentary about my experience with Aphasia and began working on the script.

Meanwhile, I had finished a film script a couple of years prior. Someone suggested that it would make a great radio play, and I considered turning it into a #podcast.

I contacted an old friend of mine, Rob Edwards, and with his help, we created a podcast script. While casting, I asked who would play Jerry, one of the leads, and Rob suggested that I take on the role myself. After some persuasion, I agreed.

Over the next two months, we recorded remotely with Rob and a couple of actor friends. Recording my parts was more challenging, as I still couldn’t read out loud, so we recorded them line by line and edited them into the other actors’ lines.

When the recording was complete, I created a final edit and added some original music from my old bandmates. We launched a small website, and with some #socialmediamarketing, we added the podcast to #Spotify, #AppleMusic, and other sites.

My work stopped on that day.  Initially I couldn’t speak properly and I was unable to read or write.  Over time and with much help from my wife and speech therapists, I got my speech, my reading and writing back on track.  Even now I find reading and writing difficult particularly if I’m tired and I still get words mixed up, but I’m a lot better. 

During that first year, I met a number of people with Aphasia and people who look after them and I vowed to do as much as I could to raise the awareness of Aphasia.   So over the next two years I developed  the idea of making a documentary about Aphasia and some of the people who are affected by it. 

In order to do this properly I needed some funding create to help pay people to work on the documentary.  I did some fundraising and got some help from the Tavistock Trust.   After that, I raised more funding through Just Giving and Kickstarter to finish the documentary.  This also helped to someone to help with the PR to build interest in it before the film was finished in September 2022.

The film was released as planned, and currently I am showing it to people in the health industry as a training resource: it recently has been successfully presented to Carers UK.

So here I am four years later and I’m still wanting to put the word out about Aphasia so if you read this, please pass it on to as many people as you can so that we can keep the interest going.
